DRIVER EDUCATION

Boise School District offers driver training courses to any Idaho resident

between the ages of 14½ and 21 

Fall registration will open the first week of August 2026

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Must have your permit before you register for a class

Classroom hours required is 30

Driving hours required is 6 

Observation hours required is 6

  • ***An IDAHO Driver Permit is required BEFORE registering for a class.***

    Ada County’s Driver’s License Services offices are open by appointment only, a measure we’ve taken to ensure your safety. We do not offer walk-up service at our 400 N. Benjamin Lane location in Boise, at our 10769 W State St. location in Star or at our 736 S. Progress Avenue location in Meridian. 

  • ITEMS REQUIRED TO OBTAIN A PERMIT FROM THE DMV:

    • Must be 14½ to obtain your drivers permit
    • An original CERTIFIED birth certificate at the time the permit is purchased.
    • Photo Identification (student activity card, military ID, or passport) 
    • Social Securtiy Card 
    • School Verification of Compliance (V.O.C) These need to be filled out before school is dismissed for summer….these cannot be obtained after school is out for the summer. 
    • Home schooled students will require a DMV provided affidavit which must be signed by their parents. 
    • The student and a legal parent/guardian must both go to the DMV to sign for the permit.
    • Students are required to take and pass a vision test to receive a permit.
    • Tell the staff at the DMV to send the permit to Boise School District.

  • It is extremely difficult to make up missed classes and drives. If you know you will not be able to attend the whole session, please sign up for a session of which you can attend every class.

  • PAYMENTS MUST BE MADE AT TIME OF ONLINE REGISTRATION

    $300 FULL TUITION
    A FEE OF $35 PER HOUR WILL BE CHARGED FOR ANY MISSED CLASSROOM/DRIVING TIME

    CANCELATION/REFUND POLICY:

    If a student needs to cancel their Driver Education registration, the Driver's Ed office must be contacted by calling 208-854-4026 or emailing drivereducation@boiseschools.org.

    • The maximum number of class hours a student can miss before being dropped from the class is 6. No refund will be given. 
    • The max number of drive hours a student can miss before being dropped is 2. No refund will be given.

    Refunds will be issued based on the following: 

    1. 100% refund if request is prior to 3:00 pm 2 weeks before the first class. minus the $5 processing fee
    2. 50% if request is prior to 3:00 pm 1 week before the first class. minus the $5 processing fee
    3. No refund 1 week prior to the first class
    1. Students and parents must read and sign the Advanced Opportunities Participation Form and turn it in signed to the counselor at the school your student currently attends.
    2. After the form has been completed and turned in, select the $90 Advanced Opportunities option on the payment screen of the Driver Ed registration form.

    **Reach out to the Counselor at your student's school if questions arise regarding Advanced Opportunities, student schedules, or credits.**
