Public Records Requests
The Boise School District is committed to transparency and providing access to public records in accordance with the Idaho Public Records Act (Idaho Code § 74-101 et seq.).
Important: Student Records Requests
The information on this page does not apply to student records requests.
Student transcripts and other student record requests are handled by the District’s Student Records Office.
Our Student Records Office maintains the records of all students who have attended Boise School District. For information about requesting student records, please visit the Student Records Office webpage.
How to Request Public Records
To help us process requests efficiently, all public records requests must be submitted in writing.
Once a request is received by the Boise School District Public Affairs Office, the District will:

Respond within three (3) business days, or
-
Notify you if additional time is needed to process the request.
Under Idaho law, the District may take up to:

10 business days for requests submitted by Idaho residents, or
-
35 business days for requests submitted by non-residents of Idaho
(Effective July 21, 2024, pursuant to Idaho Code § 74-103.)
If submitting a request by fax, regular mail, or in person, please ensure the request form is signed.

You may submit a request using any of the following methods.

When submitting a request by email, please include your mailing address so we can determine whether the request is from an Idaho resident or a non-resident, as required by Idaho law.

Public Records Request Fees (Idaho Code § 74-102)
In accordance with the Idaho Public Records Act, there is no charge for the first two (2) hours of staff time or the first one hundred (100) pages of paper copies for requests submitted by Idaho residents. Additional labor and copying costs may be charged at actual cost when requests exceed these thresholds or require redaction of exempt information. Requests submitted by non-residents may be subject to actual labor and copying costs as permitted by Idaho law. Any applicable fees will be itemized, and advance payment may be required before records are distributed.If you have questions about potential costs, please contact the Public Affairs Office before submitting your request.

While the Boise School District strives to provide records whenever legally possible, state and federal laws limit what information may be released.
Before submitting a request, please be aware that some information is protected from disclosure.

Idaho Public Records Law – Employee Information
Idaho law allows public agencies to disclose limited information about employees, including:

Employment history

Job classification
-
Pay grade and step
-
Longevity
-
Gross salary and salary history
-
Employment status
-
Workplace and employing agency
All other personnel information is protected from disclosure unless the employee provides written consent. This includes information such as:

Sex
-
Race
-
Marital status
-
Birth date
-
Home address or telephone number
-
Job applications
-
Testing or scoring materials
-
Grievances
-
Correspondence
-
Performance evaluations

Teacher Personnel Files
Idaho law provides additional protections for teacher personnel files.
Personnel files contain materials related to employee evaluations and are confidential and exempt from public disclosure under Idaho Code § 33-518.
Student Records (FERPA)
Student education records are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Under FERPA, schools may not disclose a student’s education records or personally identifiable information without written consent from the student’s parent or guardian, except in limited circumstances allowed by law.
Education records include records, files, documents, or other materials that:

Contain information directly related to a student, and
-
Are maintained by the school or by a party acting on behalf of the school.
Personally identifiable information includes items such as student names and parent names.
FERPA does allow parents to access their own child’s records.
