Core integrated literacy instruction should include the following:
-
Whole-Group Lessons for ALL students based on the grade-level standards, ideally integrating Science and Social Studies.
-
Small Group Extensions to reteach, practice, and/or extend learning of the core lesson. Students can be grouped by ability and need.
-
Groups are formed based on students' needs related to core standards. Activities can include rereading decodable texts, using leveled readers, reading trade books, rereading articles/book passages to cover key vocabulary terms, and using parallel texts with similar topics/themes.
Tier Time:
Tier Time is a time to work with students based on the Universal Screener (Istation). Assessment data will identify the lowest level of literacy need for each student. Strategies can include intense focused intervention, online (Imagine Learning), pullout, or small groups (no more than 5 students). These interventions should be the same for 4-6 weeks. See below for intervention resources.
NOTE: K-3 teachers: The Wonders curriculum has much of what we need to provide effective reading instruction. The suggestions listed below are ways we can strengthen our teaching of Wonders through instructional techniques and extended practice routines known to improve students' reading skills during Tier Time.
